TCE Carton Recycling Program
Kick-Off Day
May 8th, 2017
TCE Carton Recycling Program Kick-Off Day was Monday, March 8th, 2017. The Green Team was on the job and assisted at all three lunches. Students at Twin City Elementary School did a great job remembering what should go into the cafeteria garbage cans and what should go into the cafeteria recycling cans.
We collected and shared the carton recycling data for day 1 with the staff and students. We collected the carton bags, dumped them outside and counted how many milk cartons and juice boxes were recycled. We added them together and found that we had recycled 313 cartons just on day 1! (We decided to count recycled cartons every day for the first week so we could determine the daily average of recycled cartons... that is still TBD!)
Please watch the videos below. We hope you enjoy them!

Twin City Elementary Goes Green!
Exciting News!
We had a great surprise at one of our assemblies. Our class was recognized by the Snohomish Waste Management and our school for our work around recycling! It was a huge surprise and we were all so excited! We earned a certificate and all students received a reusable water bottle. Thank you Miss Alexis at Snohomish Waste Management!
Phase 2:
TCE Carton Recycling Program
We have started our Phase 2 recycling plan... The TCE Carton Recycling Program! This was a big project to tackle, but with advice from Alexis Alloway (Snohomish Waste Management), we felt ready.
First, students researched suggested methods of how to set up a milk carton and juice box program in the cafeteria. Then, we gathered data to support our plan. We determined approximately how many cartons we are currently throwing away daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. With the support of our principal and custodian, we developed a carton recycling process for the cafeteria. We shot video clips to model what the process would look like in the cafeteria. The students all created slide presentations and edited the video clips with Wevideo to share with the school.
Below you can see the student created presentations for the school and the teacher created presentation for the staff. (The student edited Wevideos are embedded into their presentations. Just click the video to watch!) We hope you enjoy them!

Phase 1:
Recycling in the Classroom
We have continued our work with Snohomish County Waste Management and are taking on the role of being our school's Green Team! We completed a garbage can and recycling container audit of all the classrooms and staff rooms to find out if everyone had access to recycling containers.
We discovered that not everyone had recycling containers and that teachers and staff members preferred having the smaller recycling "cans" versus the larger recycling "bins." We then put in a request to our Waste Management representative, Miss Alexis, for 59 small recycling cans and recycling signage. They granted the request and we will be delivering them to the classrooms after Christmas Break!
We have been busy preparing commercials to share with the students and staff members so that they can increase recycling in their classrooms. Students also created "How to Recycle in the Classroom" presentations to share with teachers and students. We invited everyone to visit our room, listen to the presentations, and receive their new recycling cans and posters.
Our goal is to have everyone in our school rethink before throwing things away, reduce what they throw away, reuse things instead of throwing things away AND to recycle all recyclable materials! We will complete another garbage audit in the spring and will interview our night custodian to find out if our goal has been reached.
We hope you enjoy our commercials and "How to Recycle in the Classroom" presentations about recycling!
