JOIDES Resolution
Expedition 360: Indian Ridge Moho
We will be participating in a live webcast session on December 18, 2015, with members from the JOIDES Resolution. The title of their current expedition is, Expedition 360: Indian Ridge Moho. Speaking with the onboard scientists and educators will allow us to make real life connections to the rock cycle information that we've been learning about in class. We are so excited to be able to have the opportunity to ask questions and learn new information about the science research and life at sea!
This opportunity came about when we read a BBC article titled, Bid to Drill Deep Inside Earth, and sent in an application to participate in a webcast session with actual educators and scientists that are currently onboard the JOIDES Resolution.

"The JOIDES Resolution is a seagoing research vessel that drills core samples and collects measurements from under the ocean floor, giving scientists a glimpse into Earth’s development."

"The JR's science crew is specific to each mission, with the skills and science disciplines chosen especially to achieve the mission’s goals."

We received an email from Alejandra Martinez, one of the Onboard Education and Outreach Officers and she said, "We highly encourage you to explore the website and do some activities with the students before the interaction to make the experience more meaningful."
She shared a link where we could find resources and activities from Deep Earth Academy. "Deep Earth Academy’s mission is to raise awareness about ocean drilling science and its central role in our understanding of the Earth’s past, present and future, teach science content and process, and inspire careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Our approach includes use of authentic data, inquiry-centered activities and interdisciplinary explorations drawing from the adventures of the JOIDES Resolution ship and the earlier ocean drilling ship; the Glomar Challenger."

We spent time researching information about the JOIDES Resolution and the research that they will be doing on this expedition.
We then generated a list of 46 questions to ask the scientists during our webcast session. Each student chose either 3 or 4 questions to ask. If we aren't able to get to all of our questions answered during the webcast, then we will submit the remaining ones to their, "Ask a Scientist" page! |
