Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
And
Try Something New!
When my students and I made contact with the Onboard Education Officer and scientists on the JOIDES Resolution, I was fascinated with the fact that they take educators out on their 2 month expeditions. The educators help create public awareness about the science and research that happens on the various expeditions.
While arranging our classroom webcast session with Alejandra Martinez, one of the Onboard Education Officers, we spoke briefly about how she came across the opportunity. At that time, she encouraged me to apply but said that they weren't currently accepting applications. Recently, however, I received an email from Sharon Cooper. Sharon is the Education and Outreach Manager for the U.S. Science Support Program. She told me that they were going to be accepting applications for five different expeditions next year and that I should consider applying.
At first, I was not going to apply. Honestly, the thought of being onboard a science research vessel for 2 months is a little intimidating. However, I had to go back and remind myself of what we always say in my classroom. "Step Outside Your Comfort Zone and Try Something New!" So I decided to send in an application.
I have no idea as to whether or not I will be accepted. According to the website, "The Onboard Education Officers are selected through a competitive application and interview process." However, whether I'm accepted or not isn't my only focus! (Although, it really would be an exciting adventure!) What I really wanted to show my students is that they inspired me to attempt something that is WAY outside my comfort zone and would definitely be something new. I watch them try new things each and every day and not one of them ever says, "I can't do it!"
So, I created the screencast video below for my amazing students to let them know that, Mrs. Devora stepped outside of her comfort zone! And as I said at the end of the video, "I don't know if I'll make it but at least I'll know I tried."
