Welcome to our One Little Word Podcast and Challenge!
One Little WordWe decided to turn our first writing project of 2016 into our very first podcast! We all chose one little word that would represent us for 2016. The word could be an inspiring word or a word that could help us achieve a goal. We wrote our essays and practiced speaking them with the goal being, "When someone listens to our podcast, they should feel as though we are speaking directly to them."
We hope you enjoy listening to our first podcast and that Our One Little Word helped light up your day! |
Our One Little Word Podcast |
Inspiring Others...
We discovered that our words have meaning and that they are inspiring to those that listen to them!
Staci Lauinger, the school district's Title I/LAP Coordinator & Instructional Coach, visited our classroom. She was so inspired, after listening to our words, that she decided to write her own "One Little Word" essay! She gifted a book to our class titled, You're Here for a Reason, by Nancy Tillman, and told us that we inspire her! |
|
Our One Little Word Challenge To You!
If you too, were inspired, we challenge you to write your own "One Little Word" essay. If you send them to us, we would love to read and share them! You may email them to:

My little word is understanding. It is so difficult at times to understand all that is around us as well as those that are around us. There are so many differences in the world and if we all had just a little better understanding, think of what a beautiful world it would be.

My one little word is connect. Life is busy being a wife, mom of four children, and working part-time. As my children get older, their lives get busier with school, sports, church, and other various activities. While these are all good things, it leaves less time for me to connect with my children. That is why connect is my one little word, in 2016 I want to make more time to be able to connect with my children and family. The stronger the connection we have the better we will be able to withstand life's challenges.

Here is my word: "Respect"
I feel that I must respect all people, regardless of their feelings, their beliefs, their nationalities, their difficulties, their color. I don't have to subscribe to their beliefs or subordinate my own beliefs to theirs if they run counter to mine--but I must respect them as a person--a fellow human being, a fellow son or daughter of a Common Heavenly Father.
While it is very important that I respect my neighbors, it is also important that I respect people with whom I have an entirely opposite belief, and in many situations I must diligently search my heart for that respect.
If I could select a second word, it would be "Obedience."

My word is Grace. Grace is about loving and forgiving yourself and others. I want to be able to give myself grace when I make a mistake, do or say something I'm not proud of, or have a bad day. I also want to give grace to those around me and remember that none of us are perfect. We all need to allow ourselves and each other a little more grace.

Family...
Because that’s where I find my greatest joy and purpose. Family is the people who love me best, and whom I love best. With them I can be myself with no anxiety. A family is the most lasting and tightest of all teams, working together, playing together, and experiencing all facets of life with your favorite people.

Thanks for helping me think about the coming year! My one little word is flexible. I can struggle to allow my plans to change when life throws curveballs. I want to be willing and able to adjust to the changes life brings with less difficulty.
Thanks!

My one little word is enjoy! My challenge for my self this year is to enjoy the little things in my life more. Enjoy the things I do daily. Take time to do the things I do enjoy. I enjoy lazy Saturdays with my boys. The simple things like spending time outdoors going for a hike or bike ride.

Here is my one little word-
My one little word is history. This year my grandfather will turn 90 and another family member will be 95. I want to take the time this year to hear and learn from their stories of themselves and our family. It is just amazing the changes in life they have seen, but also how relevant some of their life experiences are to today. Author Michael Crichton once said, "If you don't know history, you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know you are part of a tree." I look forward to understanding more of my "tree" this year.

My one little word for 2016 is humility. Humility is an important character trait that I want to continue to develop this year. What is humility? Well, I define humility as thinking of others more. Humility is the character trait that helps me remember that everyone's feelings and dreams are as important to them as my feelings and dreams are to me. Humility helps me remember that all people, including me, have lots more to learn. I hope that by cultivating humility I will be a better friend, family member, and human being.

My one little word is success.
I believe the recipe for success starts with attitude and belief add in some determination and a few sprinkles of imagination and creative solutions and you have created success. I think that Thomas Edison sums up the path to success with this quote “ I have not failed I have just found 10,000 ways that don’t work”. Imagine success as a giant tower look up and see the top of the tower (your goal) looming in the clouds. Now look over at the elevator and see a thousands and thousands of people waiting their turn to take the elevator ride to the top. Now look over at the stairs. No lines, just determination and willingness to forth the effort t make it to the top of your tower. Now in real life there is no elevator (I do think many people are looking for it though) but the stairs are real, often times your goal will take a long series of steps to reach. You are only limited in your success by yourself. If you think you are not going to make it , you won’t. If listen to and believe others that it can’t be done, you won’t make it. Many times the path to success is not straight or clearly marked , but it is there!! Just believe in yourself, don’t give up, don’t be afraid to ask for help and you will succeed!!

Still. That is my One Little Word for 2016.
As in the still, quiet waters of the lake.
As in the still of the night.
Or, be still my beating heart.
When I am still, I can take in what is around me. I can truly listen. And when I am still, I can stop my mind from its constant activity. I can feel content. This is what I am striving for this year.

A friend share the following word with me:
A reminder that one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition.
UP
Read until the end ... you'll laugh.
This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv.], [prep.], [adj.], [n] or [v].
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.
At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.
We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.
If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP!

My one little word for 2016 is "Artistic". I chose this word because I am very artistic and I want to keep getting better and better. I plan to improve by doing more art. I have enjoyed seeing different art on the internet. I also went to a glass blowing experience which was really cool to watch. Art is fun to watch and do because some art is really interesting.

I've so enjoyed hearing all of the words that have been shared so far! It is hard to narrow it down to just one little word, but if I have to pick JUST one little word for 2016, it would be FAMILY. I chose this word, because family is so important to me. I am fortunate to be part of a large, caring, supportive family who value our time and appreciate the differences, talents, and quirks each of us possess.
This year, some members of my immediate family are facing serious health issues, and it is more important than ever for us to be close, supportive, and present to help each other during this time. We have been going through old pictures and learning the history of our ancestors and learning more about where we come from. This has been such a fun and enlightening experience, and has inspired me to learn more about my family history.
Family goes beyond blood relations as well, and I have always felt close to- and supported by my Twin City family. The staff, students, parents and volunteers at our school make my job so much fun. I feel like we are one big family here and I love learning more about everyone who has a connection to this little school family we call "Twin City". It is so fun to read the words chosen by people who live far away and took the time to share their thoughts with us. I look forward to checking back again and learning more about this rich, caring, talented, and yes, sometimes quirky, family of students and staff at our school as well as those family members who live far away and care enough to share their one little word with us.

My one little word is organization. When my life is filled with clutter, it is difficult to find things and I feel flustered. When things are organized, it makes life go more smoothly. I can find what I need and I can remember what I need to do. This year I want to organize my life and home so that I can have more time and energy to give to my family and friends because they are the most important thing to me.

My one little word for 2016 is grateful. Everyday it is so important to remind yourself of what you are grateful for, what good things are present in your life. I like to take a moment at the dinner table with my family and talk about what we are grateful for in that day this helps us to remember all that we have and not dwell on the things we don't.

My One Little Word is: Authentic, I love this word! Some Synonyms for Authentic are genuine, trustworthy, faithful, bona fide and truthful. If there was one word I would want people to say about me, it would be that I am Authentic. I try to ask myself every night before bed was I completely Authentic today? Trust me there are times I may not like my answer, but not too often; we always have room for growth, because tomorrow is a new day to walk the talk. Thank you for letting me share my One Little Word.

It was so hard for me to choose one little word. So after some deep thought, I finally have just one...resiliency. This little word has developed my whole life. In facing good events or bad, I have meet both with the challenge to learn from it. I feel gratitude for every event because it has brought to me a wealth of knowledge and helps me take that "Supergirl" pose when needed! Thank you for the opportunity to share my one little word that I love dearly.
